Austin musician and homeless advocate Sara Hickman, far right, kneels down next to the homeless plaque and tree honoring those that lost their lives fighting to stay alive on the streets during a ceremony on Lady Bird Lake. The 16th House the Homeless Sunrise Memorial Service was held at dawn under the Homeless Tree along the jogging trail on the south shore near Auditorium Shores Sunday morning. An invocation, music, speakers, reading of names and laying of flowers with those names were among the activities of this ever-growing memorial.

The Homeless Tree was planted in 1993 as a tribute to the few who died that year. The names continue to grow with an unofficial count of 134 on this year’s list.

Douglas Crawford bows his head as he remembers his good friend Tammy, who was murdered last year.

Carnations bearing the names of those that died grace the plaque under the tree.

Bruce Elfant, left, and Ed McHorse, right, join hands during the Invocation by Senior Pastor Roger Paynter. For a more thorough gallery of photos click here
