More than 18,000 runners and walkers participated in the 32 annual Capitol 10,000 footrace Sunday morning. The first mile of the race is a slight uphill grade heading north on Congress Ave. The men’s winner Darren Brown applauds a band playing music at the corner of Congress Ave. and 10th St. as he readies to make the first turn near the one mile mark. Brown won with a time of 30:26 in just his first appearance.

Fred Aus of Austin appears through a burst of sunlight creeping in from 9th St. as the main pack of runners near the first mile marker. The pack filled all six lanes of Congress Avenue.

Kristin Messer, of Austin, fights uphill at the one-mile mark as the course turns from Congress Ave. onto E. 11th St. before turning north on San Jacinto Blvd. and then west on W. 15th St. around the State Capitol. Messer won the wheelchair division with a time of 47: 42
