It cost him his job at a Round Rock Randalls, but Troy Schafer, who was fired last week after chasing a purse snatcher out of the grocery store, said he didn’t have much choice. It was about 2 p.m. July 21, and Schafer had just walked in from finishing a sandwich and chips in front of the store when he heard 52-year-old Ann Welch screaming for help. Welch had been standing at the deli counter with her purse resting in her cart when someone ran past her, grabbed her purse and ran out the door. She followed, screaming and pointing where he’d gone. A U.S. Army veteran who said he spent some time in South Korea in the 1990s, Schafer, 36, took up the chase with help from a customer, he said. Schafer chased the suspect for about another quarter-mile before police caught up and arrested the 15-year-old. “We got her purse back, all of her money, everything,” Schafer said. “Then, the next day, my loss prevention unit from Randalls came in and said I was suspended without pay.” A few days later, Schafer said, he was fired. Ann Welch demonstrates the way her purse was snatched from her cart as she shopped at the deli counter of the Round Rock Randall’s grocery store last week. Welch vows to boycott Randall’s if they don’t give Schafer his job back. “I understand their policy but there should be exceptions. He heard me crying for help and he responded.” said Welch in referring to Schafer’s efforts in tracking down the suspect.

  1. I have written several letters to Randalls corporate office as well as calling the Randalls on Gattis School Rd to get a comment or explanation as to why they did what they did. Their response was to say they had no comment. Basically, I told them to kiss my *ss. I will NEVER shop at Randalls again. Until today, I had been a faithful shopper there for 25 years. Now, I’d sooner starve to death than give them one more penny of my money. As far as I am concerned, Randalls can SUCK IT!!!

  2. I was so astounded by what Randall’s did that I started a Facebook Group to protest their action. I’m hoping to get lots of members to join and put some real pressure on Randall’s to rethink this kind of policy.

  3. I will never shop at Randalls again.

  4. We are so worried about offending someone common sense is no longer used I will not walk thru there doors until someone grows some b@(($ and does what is right and gives this guy a metal

  5. Well, the lawyers tell Randall’s to have this policy to avoid liability in case someone gets hurt. The lawyers are ruining our country with liability lawsuits. I can understand that Randall’s is in an untenable position and they would get sued if someone gut hurt in the pursuit. BTW this is the same reason our health care costs so much more than in other countries, liability lawsuits.
