Second graders participate in the Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebration at Joe Dan Mills Elementary school in AISD Wednesday morning by singing, dancing and portraying Mexico’s struggle against Spain with enactments. Diez y Seis de Septiembre, the 16th of September, signals the beginning of Mexico’s battle for independence from Spain. On this day in 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo de Costilla led revolutionary forces against the Spaniards. This national Mexican holiday has been celebrated as Mexico’s Independence Day since 1825.
