Bowie Leadership Class Presents Check to Lamika Turner

The Student Leadership Class for Austin Bowie High School presented Season for Caring recipient Lamika Turner and Easter Seals a donation check for $1851.48 as part of their final exam. Teacher Chris Godwin said the students wanted to do something different this year and chose Turner from the list of Austin American-Statesman Season for Caring candidates, because she was a working mother caring for her young children trying to make ends meet. Turner embraces senior student Lily Atilano, above, as she greets all 26 kids Wednesday morning at the apartment complex where she works. In the bottom sequence Turner’s reaction was from tears to joy as she now can pay down her debt and buy her children some Christmas presents. This was a moving experience for everyone in the room. The students got to see firsthand how charitable donations help those in need, and Ms. Turner can tell how much these kids care about the world around them. It was indeed a true holiday moment and for us at the Statesman, our annual Season for Caring campaign has helped numerous disadvantaged people get through the holidays with a smile on their face as well as cope with the hardships they have endured by leaning on someone else for a change.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
