The Most Reverend Joe S. Vasquez was installed as the Fifth Bishop of Austin at a Celebration of the Eucharist and Rite of Installation at St. William Parish in Round Rock, TX. Monday afternoon. During the long procession which featured hundreds of deacons and priests Bishop Vasquez was the last to enter the church and greets a friend with a wink of the eye as he makes his way towards the altar. If you have never witnessed such an event it is full of pomp and circumstance, long speeches, a full mass and is truly a celebration of the Catholic church. The Diocese of Austin chose the Round Rock church because it is the largest in the diocese and could accommodate the most people. The pews started to fill two hours before the ceremony and Vasquez’s family took two rows by themselves. It was an interesting event to document, but a huge challenge with the variety of light sources and it some cases it was too dark to even try. Bishop Vasquez seems to be cut out of the same mold as his predecessors, John McCarthy and Gregory Aymond, both of whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. His Excellency was well received.
