White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. Today in Austin about two hundred people gathered on the south lawn of the Texas Capitol to march through downtown to Republic Square Park at W. 4th and Guadalupe St. for festivities and recognition of their achievements. Friends from L-R: Fallon Garrett, Efrain Jimenez, Ricardo Piedra, Lataria Weaver, and Shannon Carter, lean on one another for support and guidance as they visit the many vendors setup in the park. The fivesome work for the Austin Lighthouse, a service oriented non-profit organization. with the mission to assist people who are blind or vision impaired.
